Enrolled Agent (or EA) is a term that refers to a tax advisor who is a federally authorised tax practitioner whose authority is granted by the United States Department of the Treasury. Enrolled Agents represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in matters relating to taxation, such as audits, collections, and appeals.
EA is a very advantageous course for someone who is wishing to add a certification to their portfolio that would certify them as an expert in the tax field. Your expertise as a tax professional will be recognized by the IRS' highest certification, EA.
To pursue EA does not require a prior qualification. If you are a graduate with accounting knowledge, you can apply for EA. Your knowledge and competency related to tax will be checked through either of the given two paths to become an Enrolled Agent.
In comparison to the CPA test, the educational requirements for becoming an Enrolled Agent are rather lax. This in no way simplifies the EA exam. Along with completing three exam sections, one must demonstrate sufficient competence in tax subjects to ensure that the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) appropriately represents the skills and knowledge required to become an IRS Enrolled Agent.
